Classes
Offered
NEW!
Hellos and Goodbyes
1 session, 3 hours
Did you know that there are many, many ways
to cast on and to bind off? How do you choose a cast
on or a bind off for a particular project? Learn
and/or practice several different cast on and bind
off methods. Expert tips will be shared on when to
use which method if your pattern doesn't specify.
Supply list and homework provided with registration.
Step Lively into Intarsia
1 session, 3 hours
Interested in intarsia colorwork but don't know
how to start, or worried about getting in over your
head? Join us for this class covering the basics of
intarsia through working the iKnitiative project
Step Lively Shawl (Style P19). We will learn the
mechanics while Natalie shares many helpful tips.
By the end of class you will have practiced all
skills required for the project and have a healthy
start on the shawl. Supply list and homework
provided with registration.
Simple Crochet for
Knitters
1 session, 3 hours
More and more knitting patterns (including some
iKnitiative patterns!) are featuring crochet details
or finishing. In this class, learn how to work some
basic crochet stitches: chain stitch, single
crochet, double crochet, and reverse single crochet.
The focus will be on the use of crochet to edge,
accent, and finish knitted fabric. There is a
materials fee for handouts. Supply list provided
with registration.
Getting Engauged
1 session, 3 hours
When you advance from knitting scarves to creating
garments, suddenly knitting gauge becomes important.
Learn the elements of gauge, how to make and measure
a gauge swatch, and why it's so important (including
war stories). Find out when “close” is good
enough—and when it’s a recipe for disappointment or
worse. Discover the keys to successful yarn
substitutions. There is a materials fee for
handouts. Supply list provided with registration.
Some Assembly Required
1 session, 3 hours
So, you have a pile of sweater parts. Now
what? In this class we cover shoulder seams,
armhole seams, side seams, picking up stitches for
neck and button bands, and buttonholes. We
will work together using swatches made as homework.
There is a materials fee for handouts. Supply list
and homework instructions provided with
registration.
Feeling Edgy
1 session, 3 hours
In this class we explore a variety of interesting
knitted edgings that take a sweater from simple to
sublime. Work samples and learn designer tips for
planning and placing borders and trims. There is a
materials fee for handouts. Supply list and homework
instructions provided with registration.
Cable Ready!
1 session, 3 hours
If you can knit and purl, then you are Cable Ready!
This class will reveal the techniques behind those
fascinating twisting stitch patterns. We will cover
basic techniques for forming cables, learn about the
special tools used in cable knitting, and learn how
to read written and charted instructions. Students
will work sample pieces using basic cabling
techniques that can become bracelets (following
iKnitiative's Beaux Bangles pattern, Style A51), and
build confidence for future cable projects. Supply
list provided with registration.
YO! Lace!
1 session, 3 hours
In this class we cover the basics of lace knitting,
that is, putting holes in your knitting on purpose!
Learn the techniques and terms that result in
openwork both simple and fancy. We will decode and
work from both charted and written instructions. You
must know how to knit and purl and it will be
helpful if you can increase and decrease. There is a
materials fee for handouts. Supply list provided
with registration.
Knitting with Ribbon Yarns
1 session, 3 hours
In this hands-on
class, we will go beyond stockinette and garter to
try out several stitch patterns that highlight the
characteristics and appearance of those gorgeous
ribbon yarns so popular today. We will elongate,
slip, cross, wrap, and loop and also learn expert
tips for handling ribbon yarns. Applications in
projects from scarves to sweaters will be discussed.
There is a materials fee for handouts. Supply list
provided with registration.
Get Shorty: Exploring
Shortrows in Knitting
1 session, 3 hours
Learn where, why, and how shortrowing reveals
amazing possibilities for fabulous finishing,
easy-yet-dazzling colorwork, and fit-enhancing
shaping in your knitting. Master this supremely
useful technique that will greatly enhance your
knitting skills. We will practice the mechanics of
shortrowing—wrapping stitches and turning, then
later hiding those wraps—and discuss applications
that may or may not be written in your pattern.
There is a materials fee for handouts. Supply list
provided with registration.
The Magic Loop
1 session, 2 hours
Hate working with double-pointed needles? Try out a
method for knitting in the round on one long
circular needle. This method is applicable to
anything knit in the round, particularly socks.
Skills required: cast on, knit, purl. Needle and
practice yarn provided.
Magic Socks
3 sessions, 2 hours each
Just Say No to double-pointed needles! Now
there’s a way for the porcupine-averse to make
socks, the perfect take-anywhere project. We
will use the Magic Loop method to knit an otherwise
traditional sock from the cuff down using
self-patterning (more magic!) sock yarn.
Skills required: cast on, knit, purl.
There is a materials fee for handouts and sock
pattern. Supply list provided with
registration.
Knitting through Thick and
Thin
1 session, 3 hours
In this class we explore opportunities and
limitations of combining different weights of yarn
in the same knitted fabric to create interesting
textures and beguiling openwork. See examples and
work swatches of intriguing fabrics with interesting
properties. This class is oriented toward design
inspiration, experimentation, and creativity. There
is a materials fee for handouts. Supply list
provided with registration.
